It's December Already?!

Nedas was our star student.  Nedas is a star because he likes helping people and he is a good friend.

We will need to know 90 popcorn words by the end of kindergarten

This week we learned the popcorn words to, do and too. Please practice popcorn words at home with your child. The popcorn words are found in the red bag in their green folder. The bag should contain the following words: I, a, it, in, like, see, big, my, up, run, is, but, can, am, did, not, we, me, on, at and on.
Next week's popcorn words: ran, for and into

We will be adding two/three words a week from now on; therefore, your support at home will only benefit your child.
Some ideas to do with popcorn words: write them in shaving cream, rainbow write (the kids know this one), write them in rice, use magnet letters to spell the words, stamp out the word using letter stamps, play memory using the words (you will need to make two sets of each word in order to play), write using chalk, find the words in books or magazines, use letter stencils to make the words, use play dough to make the words. These are all ways to help reinforce these popcorn words.

FOCUS or LISTEN...use your attent-o-scope!!! We need to use our eyes, ears and brain when we focus attention on something.  Add caption

Building our social skills is also important in kindergarten!

FEELINGS-happy, excited, sad, scared, shocked

Mrs. Will visited our classroom and talked to us about feelings.  Feelings show on our face.  Feelings also are felt in our bodies and heard in our voice.  Look for the purple homelink for more information.

Through PBIS, we are encouraged to reinforce positive behavior; therefore, when I see a student being responsible, being respectful or being safe I give him/her a paw. Reinforcing positive behavior creates a more positive learning environment for our children which allows those students who are struggling to improve. Use this practice at home. Praise your child for pushing in their chair, for cleaning up after himself or for playing nicely with a sibling or friend.

Box Tops!!!

BOX TOPS: Don't forget to send in Box Tops!!!

This week we read a book called My Dad and I . We discussed all the things the character liked to do with his dad.  We wrote all the action words (verbs).  We also read the book Look Out Big Bros Coming.  We predicted as we read.  We als read a Weekly Reader; Animals.  We did a picture walk first, then predicted what story is about by using the pictures, and finally read.  We noticed that the words repeated.   We also wrote about things we like to do.  Along with the verbs we found in the story My Dad and I, we added more verbs.  The children then finished the sentences I like to _______.  ___________ likes to _____________, too!  We shared using the ELMO.  The children encouraged one another by clapping.  We used our attent-o-scope and were great listeners!  We also pointed and read our writing sample from last week, A _______ is ______ but a ________ is __________.  We circled the popcorn words using a different color for different words.

The kindergartners also worked hard on the sounds "z" "ee" and "or". The action for "z" is flapping your hands like a buzzing bee. The action for "ee" is hands are on the sides of your head like donkey ears with fingers up.  The action for "or" are hands on the side of your  head like donkey ears but fingers down.  Please look for the review cards in your child's folder.

In math, we have been working with numbers 1-5. We are slowly making progress with the correct form of each number. We worked on the number 4, worked on adding, reading a number sentence which includes a plus sign and an equal sign, we made numbers 1-9 using Play-Doh and counted out numbers 1-9.  We have also been working on Starfall.com for more practice.

Next week, we will continue working with numbers 1-5.

We are continuing to count by 1's and 10's.  Keep counting at home!
We will also continue to compare numbers (greater than/less than).

Have a good weekend!
