Gobble! Gobble!

Due to the short week next week, I included what we will be covering next week.   We will be working hard in kindergarten those two days, so your kids will be working up an appetite!  Have a great Turkey-Day with your families.

Daniel was our star student. Daniel is a star because he is cool!

We will need to know 90 popcorn words by the end of kindergarten

This week we learned the popcorn words am, did and not. Please practice popcorn words at home with your child. The popcorn words are found in the red bag in their green folder. The bag should contain the following words: I, a, it, in, like, see, big, my, up, run, at, we, me and on.
Next week's popcorn words: is, can and but

We will be adding two/three words a week from now on; therefore, your support at home will only benefit your child.
Some ideas to do with popcorn words: write them in shaving cream, rainbow write (the kids know this one), write them in rice, use magnet letters to spell the words, stamp out the word using letter stamps, play memory using the words (you will need to make two sets of each word in order to play), write using chalk, find the words in books or magazines, use letter stencils to make the words, use play dough to make the words. These are all ways to help reinforce these popcorn words.

FOCUS or LISTEN...use your attent-o-scope!!! We need to use our eyes, ears and brain when we focus attention on something.

Mrs. Will visited our classroom this week and modeled how to be assertive in order to communicate our needs.  We practiced with one another by sharing what we like with the other person.  We had to look right the person, remain respectful, and in a calm voice we shared our thoughts.  This practice reminds us how to ask for help in and out of the classroom.  Look for the purple homelink in your child's folder for more information.  Due to the short week next week, Mrs. Will will not be visiting our classroom.

Through PBIS, we are encouraged to reinforce positive behavior; therefore, when I see a student being responsible, being respectful or being safe I give him/her a paw. Reinforcing positive behavior creates a more positive learning environment for our children which allows those students who are struggling to improve. Use this practice at home. Praise your child for pushing in their chair, for cleaning up after himself or for playing nicely with a sibling or friend.

Box Tops!!!

BOX TOPS: Don't forget to send in Box Tops!!!

This week we read the book Teh Little Fish. We talked about adding, plus or addition and taking away or subtraction.  We also reviewed the popcorn words "a" and "me" by putting together the sentence "A turkey is chasing me!"  We brainstormed things that we are thankful for and wrote the sentence "I am thankful for..." in our writing journal.  A lot of the students were thankful for their family members!  The kindergarteners did a great job remembering to capitalize and to put a period at the end of their sentence!.

The kindergartners also worked hard on the sounds "oa" and "ie". The action for "oa" is hand in front of your mouth like you just saw something surprising (like a goat under an oak tree!).  And the action for "ie" is like you standing tall and saying "ie" to a captain (be sure to salute).   Next week we will not have any new sounds.

In math, we have been working with numbers.  We are working on making a large quilt of numbers.  We are working on tallying to 50, stamping 5 groups of 10, and rainbow writing the number 50. We are also working on writing and recognizing the numbers 1-5.

Look for a math project to be done at home (coming home on Monday, November 19). It is fun way to practice counting and great way to spend quality time together.  The project is due on or before Friday, November 30.  Have fun!

Next week, we will continue working with numbers 1-10, tallying our numbers and comparing numbers 1-10.

We are continuing to count by 1's and 10's. Keep counting at home!

Have a good weekend and wonderful Thanksgiving Break!
