Short And Sweet!

Due to the short week, we did not have a star student.

We will need to know 90 popcorn words by the end of kindergarten

This week we learned the popcorn words we and me.  We compared/contrasted the two words using a Venn Diagram.  We were able to come to the conclusion that both words have the letter "e" in common and the difference is one has a "w" and the other an "m".  Ask your child about the Venn Diagram. See if they remember what it looks like.
Please practice popcorn words at home with your child. The popcorn words are found in the red bag in their green folder. The bag should contain the following words: I, a, it, in, like, see, big, my, up, run, at and on.

Next week's popcorn words: am, did, not

We will be adding two/three words a week from now on; therefore, your support at home will only benefit your child.
Some ideas to do with popcorn words: write them in shaving cream, rainbow write (the kids know this one), write them in rice, use magnet letters to spell the words, stamp out the word using letter stamps, play memory using the words (you will need to make two sets of each word in order to play), write using chalk, find the words in books or magazines, use letter stencils to make the words, use play dough to make the words. These are all ways to help reinforce these popcorn words.

We use our attento-scope to help us FOCUS!
SELF-TALK to stay on task. ..Mrs. Will visited our classroom and taught us how self talk can help us be successful learners.  We listened to the song "The Learner Song" and moved along with the song.  She also helped understand when to be more assertive when it comes to our learning.  Look for the purple sheet in your child's folder on Tuesday (sorry forgot to give them to the kids today).

Through PBIS, we are encouraged to reinforce positive behavior; therefore, when I see a student being responsible, being respectful or being safe I give him/her a paw. Reinforcing positive behavior creates a more positive learning environment for our children which allows those students who are struggling to improve. Use this practice at home. Praise your child for pushing in their chair, for cleaning up after himself or for playing nicely with a sibling or friend.

Box Tops!!!

BOX TOPS: Don't forget to send in Box Tops!!!

This week we read a Weekly Reader about Voting.  Mrs. Hansen read the book No Jumping on the Bed. We talked about the rhyming words in the book (Hattie, Mattie, Pattie).
We also talked about kind words and how kind words make us feel happy.  We brainstormed and came up with a list of kind words.  We then wrote our kind words in a speech bubble.  Ask your child what kind word(s) he/she wrote in the speech bubble.

The kindergartners were also introduced to the sound of "ai".  The action to the sound is cupping your hand around your ear saying "ai" because you couldn't hear something.  This is the first vowel pair that the children have been introduced to this year.  "When two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking".  We compared words like "ran" and "rain".

In math, we have been working on writing the numbers 1 and 2 correctly.  Look for the circled number.  The circled number is the one your child thought he/she did their best work on.

Next week, we will continue working with numbers 1-5.

We are continuing to count by 1's and 10's. Keep counting at home!

Have a good weekend!
