The Countdown Begins!

Kian was our star student.  Kian is a star because he has good manners and he likes to hug!

On Monday, we had a Lockdown Drill.  The Darien Police made sure we did things right so that we are safe.  The children did very well with being quick and quiet.

Thank you to the PTO for doing a fabulous job with the Holiday Shop!  Thank you to all the helpers!  The children had a great time shopping!  'Tis the season!!!

We will need to know 90 popcorn words by the end of kindergarten

This week we learned the popcorn words ran, for and into. Please practice popcorn words at home with your child. The popcorn words are found in the red bag in their green folder. The bag should contain the following words: I, a, it, in, like, see, big, my, up, run, is, but, can, am, did, not, we, me, on, at, on, ran, for and into.
Next week's popcorn words: yes, and and little

We will be adding two/three words a week from now on; therefore, your support at home will only benefit your child.
Some ideas to do with popcorn words: write them in shaving cream, rainbow write (the kids know this one), write them in rice, use magnet letters to spell the words, stamp out the word using letter stamps, play memory using the words (you will need to make two sets of each word in order to play), write using chalk, find the words in books or magazines, use letter stencils to make the words, use play dough to make the words. These are all ways to help reinforce these popcorn words.

FOCUS or LISTEN...use your attent-o-scope!!! We need to use our eyes, ears and brain when we focus attention on something. Add caption

Building our social skills is also important in kindergarten!

FEELINGS-happy, excited, sad, scared, shocked

Mrs. Will visited our classroom and reviewed feelings. Feelings show on our face. Feelings also are felt in our bodies and heard in our voice.

Through PBIS, we are encouraged to reinforce positive behavior; therefore, when I see a student being responsible, being respectful or being safe I give him/her a paw. Reinforcing positive behavior creates a more positive learning environment for our children which allows those students who are struggling to improve. Use this practice at home. Praise your child for pushing in their chair, for cleaning up after himself or for playing nicely with a sibling or friend.

Box Tops!!!

BOX TOPS: Don't forget to send in Box Tops!!!

This week we read a book called Aaron and Gayla's Alphabet Book .  We went through the alphabet using the letters to show a verb or action word.  We also read a Weekly Reader about Celebrations!  We discussed the many ways people celebrate. Another book that we enjoyed was Friends at School . We talked about all the different things we can do at school with our friends.  We also talked about how friends can help us and how we can help our friends.  Friends are nice to have!  Then we wrote about what we do with friends at school.  ______ and I like to _________ at school.  As your kindergartner what he/she likes to do at school with his/her friends.

The kindergartners also worked on the sounds "w" and "v".  The action for "w" is like blowing leaves out of your hands.  The action for "v" is like driving a van. Please practice  building fluency with your child.  Make flashcards with the letters on them (mix uppercase and lowercase together).  Time your child to see how many letters he/she can produce sounds for in one minute.  Fluency with letters will eventually help with fluency in reading.   We do this in the classroom so the children are familiar with this.

We are working on counting to 50!
In math, we have been working with numbers 1-5. We are slowly making progress with the correct form of each number. We worked on the number 5,  we made numbers 1-9 using Play-Doh and counted out numbers 1-9. We have also been working on Starfall.com for more practice.

Next week, we will continue working with numbers 1-5.

We are continuing to count by 1's and 10's. Keep counting at home!
We will also continue to compare numbers (greater than/less than).

Have a good weekend!
