Kindergarten Commotion!!!

Due to the shortened week, we did not have a star student.

 IMPORTANT!!!

MAGAZINE DRIVE!!!
Great job kindergarten families, we came in first place (along with Mrs. Hull's room) in the magazine drive.  To celebrate, the PTO will be providing cheese pizza and juice on Thursday, October 18, 2012. Please let me know if you do NOT want your child to have pizza.

This week we attended a "Fire Talk". We learned about fire safety; dialing 911,  stop, drop and roll and other fire safety tips!

We also had another a fire drill but this time the fire department was here to make sure we were being safe!  Please reassure your child that these are drills.  We do this to make sure we know what to do in case of a fire.

Due to our shortened week, our Wednesday was a Monday schedule, so we did not get to visit the library this week.  We will be back on our regular schedule next week.  Don't forget to return library books.

Please practice popcorn words at home with your child.  The popcorn words are found in the red bag in their green folder.  The bag should contain the following words: I, a, it, in, like, see, big, my

We will be adding two words a week from now on; therefore, your support at home will only benefit your child.
Some ideas to do with popcorn words: write them in shaving cream, rainbow write (the kids know this one), write them in rice, use magnet letters to spell the words, stamp out the word using letter stamps, play memory using the words (you will need to make two sets of each word in order to play), write using chalk, find the words in books or magazines, use letter stencils to make the words, use play dough to make the words.  These are all ways to help reinforce these popcorn words.

Through PBIS, we are encouraged to reinforce positive behavior; therefore, when I see a student being responsible, being respectful or being safe I give him/her a paw.  Reinforcing positive behavior creates a more positive learning environment for our children which allows those students who are struggling to improve.  Use this practice at home.  Praise your child for pushing in their chair, for cleaning up after himself or for playing nicely with a sibling or friend.

Halloween NEWS!!!
Please have your child come to school DRESSED in their Halloween costume on Wednesday, October 31 (Halloween).  Please do NOT send treats with your child.  Thanks to our room mom and party helpers, there will be enough treats and activities.

Box Tops!!!

BOX TOPS: Don't forget to send in Box Tops!!!

This week we noted the characters and the setting of the stories we read.  We read Jonathan and His Mommy.  Jonathan and his mother live in the city.  They are the characters in the book.  We learned what Jonathan likes to do with him mom.  We came up with a list of characters from our own families (mother, father, sister, brother, grandpa or grandma, and even pets were on the list).  We also enjoyed the book Apple Trouble. Poor Hedgehog, things just kept getting stuck on him!  Ask your child what things kept getting stuck to Hedgehog.  We also enjoyed the book Room on the Broom (thanks to Cameron for his birthday book donation).  We noted the rhyming words.  After reading When the Leaf Blew In, we talked about the setting and the characters of the story.  Some of the characters are a horse, a pig, a frog and others.  We also noticed that the setting of the story is in on a farm.

We made a class book of things we like to do.  The sentence we had to finish writing is "I like to ______" .  Ask your kindergartner what he/she wrote.  Some of the kindergartners were able to write because and write why!

We are still practicing EEKK (reading to a friend).  Ask your child about EEKK.

The kindergartners also worked hard on the letters "g" and "o".  The sound of g is made like water going down a drain (pretend your hand is the water going down the drain in a spinning motion).  The sound of o is like the on/off switch, o-o-o-on, off (action is turning the switch on then off).  Last week's book of sounds went home with your child.  Have him/her read it to you.

In math, we have been working on AB and AAB patterns.  The children have also been working with positional words including inside, outside, in front of and in back of (we do this when lining up).  We will continue to review: next to, beside,  between, over, under, above and below.  We did not get to tally this week but we will continue to tally the number of days of school and counting by 1's and 10's next week.

Have a good weekend!
