January 12-January 16

READING: Next week we will be wrapping-up Theme 3 with two stories. The first is a realistic fiction called Grandpa’s Corner Store. We will be comparing/contrasting it with the second selection, a non-fiction story, titled Barrio: José’s Neighborhood.

Comprehension Skill: Review of summarizing, making inferences and evaluating, and problem solving
Grammar Skill: Nouns that change spelling in the plural (man/men), one and more than one, naming words and special nouns.
Phonics: Review digraphs th, wh, sh, ch; base word endings –er and –est, vowel pairs ai, ay, ow, ou, ee, ea and suffixes –ly and –ful.
Vocabulary Words: plot, trophies, harvest, fiesta, mural, shrubbery, tradition, barrio, custom, sidelines, grand opening, grocery store, success, supermarket, brave, bundle

SPELLING: The spelling words will be review words. They will include spelling words and vocabulary words from Theme 3.

MATH: The children have been working very hard on Chapter 8. We will continue Chapter 8 on subtracting double digits with and without regrouping. The children will practice the strategy of checking the difference of a problem with addition. We will also use the strategies of rounding to subtract and mental math. Please keep practicing subtracting facts with your second grader. Many of the children’s errors are computation errors.

SCIENCE: The children learned the different ways earth changes its shape and the different landforms that are made. They also learned about rocks, sand and soil. Next week we will learn where fossils are from and make our own fossil.
