Happy Holidays!!!

Gingerbread Boy back safe and sound...thanks to the help of his sister the Gingerbread Girl!

Slipper Day!

What a busy week!

Thank you to our room moms for a wonderful holiday celebration.  I will try to post some pictures of our holiday celebration over break (once the hustle and bustle of the season tapers off)!

It's teachers and families working together that makes our district so wonderful!  I am very grateful for all the support that my kindergarten families have shown.
This week the Gingerbread Boy kept us in anticipation all week after he ran away from our classroom but we had lots of fun planning tricky or sly ways (like the fox) to bring our Gingerbread Boy back.  We knew we couldn't run after him or he'd run!  We tried making friends, we tried making posters, we finally tried singing a song.  He finally made his way back with the help of the Gingerbread Girl (of course!).  Now, he's back safe and sound!

Your son/daughter brought home a number packet and some number flashcards.  These are for extra practice over break.  If your son/daughter brings the packet back to school completed, they will get a special treat!

Starfall.com is a great site for extra practice!  The kids are familiar with this site.

Please be sure to practice popcorn words and letter sounds/names.  Please see below for some suggested activities.

Ugly Sweater Day was fun!  Mrs. Meek won for the ugliest sweater!  Yay, Mrs. Meek!

A lot of the kindergartners are starting to notice popcorn words in books that we read, in writing or in posters/signs around the room/school.  They are great word detectives and using their eagle eyes to find those words. Please encourage this everyday when at home or when you are out together.  They love spotting those words!

We will need to know 90 popcorn words by the end of kindergarten

This week we learned the popcorn words no, so and go. Please practice popcorn words at home with your child. The popcorn words are found in the red bag in their green folder. The bag should contain the following words: I, a, it, in, like, see, big, my, up, run, is, but, can, am, did, not, we, me, on, at, on, ran, for, yes, and, little, so, go, no  and into.
When we get back from break our words will be: the, you and down
We will be adding two/three words a week from now on; therefore, your support at home will only benefit your child.

Some ideas to do with popcorn words: write them in shaving cream, rainbow write (the kids know this one), write them in rice, use magnet letters to spell the words, stamp out the word using letter stamps, play memory using the words (you will need to make two sets of each word in order to play), write using chalk, find the words in books or magazines, use letter stencils to make the words, use play dough to make the words. These are all ways to help reinforce these popcorn words.

FOCUS and LISTEN...use your attent-o-scope!!! We need to use our eyes, ears and brain when we focus attention on something.  We say "Eyes are watching. Ears are listening. Bodies still. Voices off. Or Mrs. Riadi rings the bell.  Or we say attent-o-scope.  These are all ways we rememer that it's time to FOCUS and LISTEN.

Building our social skills is also important in kindergarten!

Mrs. Will visited our classroom and talked to us about what we can do if we accidently hurt someone. We talked about how we can say "Oh I'm sorry for running into you.  Can I help you up?" or "I'm sorry for stepping on your finger.  Are you ok?".  We all do things on accident but we need to make sure that when we apologize, we mean it.  Our actions need to match our words.

POSITIVE BEHAVIOR HELP!!!
In order to maintain a positive atmosphere at this age, we need to constantly reinforce expected behavior; therefore, I'm asking for your help to build a Classroom Treasure Chest.  I am looking for small items such as stickers, pencils, erasers, small toys (McDonald's Happy Meal toys), items that five/six years would be excited to get!  Every Wednesday I will pull three names out of the PAW jar and those three students will have a chance to choose something from the Classroom Treasure Chest.  The more PAWS they earn, the more of chance they will have of getting their name pulled.
We will start this AFTER break!
Thank you for your help and support!

Box Tops!!!

BOX TOPS: Don't forget to send in Box Tops!!!

This week we read books about the Gingerbread Man.  We started the week with a book called The Gingerbread Man. This is when, we believe, our Gingerbread Boy got his idea to run.  The kindergartners retold the story and they realized that the Fox was very tricky.  We also enjoyed the book Gingerbread Friends.  This book helped us come up with one way we tried to solve the problem of the Gingerbread Boy being gone.  We also read the book Gingerbread Man Loose in the School.  We noticed that the "oo" sound is in loose and school.  From this book we tried to make posters that said "MISSING"...."Gingerbread Man".  We drew pictures on the posters and posted them throughout the school in hopes that he would be spotted.  We ended the week with the book Gingerbread Girl  and with the Gingerbread Boy returning with the Gingerbread Girl!    What a relief!  Phew!  We thought we'd never see him again!

The kindergartners also worked on the sounds "oo" like in book and "oo" like in school. The action for those two sounds is like a cuckoo bird in a cuckoo clock.

***Please practice building fluency with your child. Make flashcards with the letters on them (mix uppercase and lowercase together). Time your child to see how many letters he/she can produce sounds for in one minute. Fluency with letters will eventually help with fluency in reading. We do this in the classroom so the children are familiar with this. ***

In math, we have been working with numbers 1-10. We are slowly making progress with the correct form of each number. We worked on writing the number 7.

After break, we will continue working with numbers 1-10.

We are continuing to count by 1's and 10's. Keep counting at home!
We will also continue to compare numbers (greater than/less than).

Happy Holidays!!!  Be safe and enjoy!
